Big Joy Medium: Avocado seed juggling balls, Jianzi (shuttlecock), repurposed knotweed sticks, video, and onsite live performance Location: Entrance of the Dog Park, Wildflower Sculpture Park
Big Joy is a site-specific, participatory performance and video project that transforms the entrance of the dog park into a space of playful presence, movement, and collective mindfulness. Drawing from traditional Chinese movement practices and spontaneous improvisation, artist Hao Feng invites the public to take part in light-hearted activities—juggling with repurposed avocado seeds, kicking the shuttlecock (Jianzi), stick play with invasive knotweed, and mimed forms inspired by caterpillars, clouds, and birds.
These simple gestures open a pathway to joy—connecting body, spirit, and landscape—while filmed moments capture unscripted expressions of community and delight in motion.
Part of the 2025 Season: Walk With Me residency (Wonder Women 13), this project is presented by the Wildflower Sculpture Park (a program of the South Mountain Conservancy in collaboration with the Essex County Department of Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs). Curated by Doris Cacoilo, Alana Kakoyiannis, and Penelope Malakates, the program invites the public to walk with art along the trails of the South Mountain Reservation.
Sunday, September 21, 2025 4–6 PM Wildflower Sculpture Park, 10 Bear Lane, Maplewood, South Mountain Reservation
